Thursday at 5:30 pm Storytime – Evening Storytime is open to all ages. We’ll have
stories, songs, crafts, and more! Plus, every child gets a free book to take
home at every storytime.
Thursday at 6 pm Movie Time – Watch a fun new movie at the library. After
discovering a Yeti on the roof of her apartment building, teenage Yi and her
two friends embark on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his
family. We’ll provide popcorn and drinks or you can bring your own drinks.
Friday at Noon Ugly Sweater Party – Wear an ugly Christmas sweater for this fun
party for adults! Participate in a White Elephant gift exchange (bring a gift
costing $10 or less), play games, and eat snacks. Adults only. Seating is
limited. Sign up online at lmlibrary.org or at the front desk.
Saturday at 1 pm Last Minute Make & Take Holiday Gifts – Don’t know what to get
your friends or family this holiday season? On Saturday, December 21st
from 1 to 3 pm, join us to make something with your own hands that they are sure
to enjoy! We will have several different craft gift options to choose from, you
are welcome to make one or make them all. This event is free but supplies will
be limited.

etc.), or socks to the library and we will waive your overdue fines! All
donated items will be given to local charities. (No expired or used donations,
please.) Donate to a worthy cause and get your overdue fines forgiven.

Kids
out for Christmas break? On Monday, December 23rd between 1 and 4 pm, come on
down to play video and board games at the library! We have all kinds of games
that will keep them entertained.

Holiday
The
library will be closed for the Christmas holiday on Tuesday, December 24th
through Thursday the 26th. We will reopen for normal hours on Friday the 27th from 9:00
a.m.to 6:00 p.m.
Bad Art Kids Craft
Kids, are you bad at art, but love
to do it anyway? On Friday, December 27th at 2 pm, come to Bad Art: Kids
Edition, where the worst art is the best! We will be making art out of leftover
craft supplies.
Indoor Snowball Fight
Kids & teens don’t be bored at
home, come to the library and join in on our indoor snowball fight! On Monday, December
30th at 1 pm, we will be crafting our own marshmallow shooters and will have a
“snowball” fight with them.
Noon Year’s Eve Party
Starting at 10:30 am on Tuesday,
December 31st, we’re counting down to Noon for our Noon Year’s Eve party. Kids
can celebrate of the coming New Year with fun and games without having to stay
up until midnight!

6 p.m., we will walk through the process of finding a print-ready file online
that you can print as is or alter to fit your needs. The workshop is held every
1st Monday of the month at 6 p.m. All ages welcome. Signup online

Database spotlight – Consumer Reports
Did you know that, as a Kansas resident, you could use the online databases from the Kansas State Library to access full text magazines and journals (such as Consumer Reports) for free?
What if, like me, your oven dies just weeks before Thanksgiving? Or suppose you want to find a new dishwasher in time for the big holiday get together aftermath but don’t know which to buy? You could:
Type Dishwashers (or whatever else you’re looking for) on the first line,
And type Consumer Reports on the second line.
Choose Publication Name under the drop-down beside the second line.
Then click Search.
The first result in the list is “Dishwashers” from the Consumer Reports Buying Guide. 2017. If you click on the underlined title, you’ll go straight to the full text article.
After you bring up the article, you also have the option of looking at other articles in the same issue or looking at other issues of Consumer Reports.

Besides Explora Mulit-Search, the Kansas State Library offers access to many other great databases. You could use the Auto Repair Reference Center to find repair information for your car.
LearningExpress offers tutorials and practice tests for people at different stages in life, from elementary school through college prep. The Career Center and Job & Career Accelerator can help you study for and find a new job. Use the Computer Skills Center to learn new computer skills. And the High School Equivalency Center can help you get your GED.
Mango Languages can help you learn a new language. Universal Class offers over 500 online non-credit Continuing Education Courses. Use Heritage Quest and Genealogy Connect to learn more about your ancestors.

Don’t forget, this week you can get your fines forgiven at the library! Bring in a donation of non-perishable boxed or canned food or a toiletry item and get your fines forgiven. If you have any overdue items, bring those back in good condition with donation items and get those fines forgiven as well! All donation items should be new, unopened, and unused.
This week is Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Week, and libraries across the state will celebrate the event with storytimes and activities. According to the State Library of Kansas, “Kansas Reads to Preschoolers highlights the importance of reading to children with a goal that every Kansas child from birth to age five is read to during the week.” This is an opportunity for libraries, preschools, daycare providers, parents, and guardians around Kansas to all share a book with the young children they care for and/or work with.
This year, Kansas Reads to Preschoolers is all about colors! Here in Liberal, we will be focusing on two books: Siesta by Ginger Foglesong Guy and Bear Sees Colors by Karma Wilson. Siesta is a bilingual book that tells the same story in English and Spanish: two children get ready for a nap by finding objects of different colors. The American Library Association named Siesta a “Notable Children’s Book for Younger Readers.” According to the Kirkus review, “Warm and charming, this treat invites young readers to broaden their linguistic horizons.”
Bear Sees Colors is a playful book where Bear recognizes different colors everywhere. School Library Journal’s review states, “The opportunity for children to sharpen their rhyming and observation skills as well as learn their colors make this interactive journey a must. Don’t miss it!” Sharing Siesta and Bear Sees Colors along with other color-themed books, plus songs and a craft should help preschoolers learn color names.
We’ll have special guests at our Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Week storytimes! Tuesday at 6 pm, Liberal Mayor Joe Denoyer will be our guest storyteller. On Thursday at 11:15 am, an officer from the Liberal Police Department will be at the library to share stories. There will be a craft time to go along with the stories each storytime session. Plus, attendees at each storytime will have a chance to win a copy of the book Siesta. And of course, the library will have copies of the books available for checkout, if you decide you’d like to read them again.
This Saturday at 2 pm, join us at the library for a Colorful Celebration! Celebrate Kansas Reads to Preschoolers week with colorful stories, games, crafts, and a science experiement!
In addition, Tammy, our Teen Librarian, and I will be traveling to the local preschools to present storytimes to the children there. I look forward to connecting the kids with some great books and getting the chance to reach out to kids who might not often come to the library.
